Tutoring is so much more than helping a child do his or her homework.
This brief overview will give you a little insight into how we help
children succeed in school. Sometimes, a student will fall behind in his or her studies and needs a boost. At first, one may be tempted to think that the student is daydreaming or misbehaving in school, or is being lazy with his or her schoolwork. Little Schoolhouse Tutoring has the knowledge, training and, most importantly, the experience to know that the reason for poor grades may not be immediately obvious. If your child is suffering in school, the cause may be mental, physical, emotional, or a combination of causes. Very rarely is slow learning related to a mental disability. In fact, many students in the past have been erroneously assigned to slow-learners' classes when the proper assignment would have been to a different learning environment. Occasionally, a student's poor performance can be attributed to boredom. Yes, we have all heard kids say that school is boring at times, but sometimes a student is so mentally advanced that is classwork seems simple to him/her and thus, boring. In these cases, the solution is teaching the bright student how to adapt to the classes he/she is in while also consulting with the student's teacher and making recommendations for more challenging classwork and homework assignments. Physical limitations can be the simplest to solve, once they are discovered. We won't go into every possible situation here, but as an example, one student began doing poorly simply because she was seated near the back of the room in her new classroom. It was discovered that she had a hearing problem, but never told anyone she couldn't hear sitting in the back, so she just fell further and further behind. Her parents got her moved closer to the front, and our job was to catch her up on lost lessons. Being a child these days can be emotionally trying. Many times, emotional turmoil is evidenced in a student's grades before it is seen in his or her behavior. If your child's grades have seemed to fall suddenly for no reason, there may be an emotional cause. An experienced tutor can usually spot emotional problems and causes before the student's parents can. This is largely because tutors have seen it dozens of times in other students, but also because kids don't always communicate with their parents as openly as they would a non-related trusted adult. Students who make good grades enjoy school more, are more likely to graduate high school and more likely to attend college. Additionally, success in studies builds self-confidence which will benefit your child behaviorally, emotionally and socially for a lifetime. Let us help your struggling student get back on course. |
